Special exhibition of important cultural properties at Nonakaji Temple
The gilt bronze Maitreya Bodhisattva half-seated statue enshrined in the Hojo, which was designated a national treasure before the war and is now an important cultural property, and the wooden standing Jizo Bodhisattva statue enshrined in the Jizo Hall will be open to the public on April 17th in addition to the usual 18th of each month.
Basic information
Nonaka-ji Temple was built by Prince Shotoku with the assistance of Soga no Umako around 1,400 years ago, and is also known as the "Chu no Taishi," one of the "Three Princes of Kawachi." The original temple complex, built in the Asuka period, was destroyed by fire during the wars of the Northern and Southern Courts period, but the remains of the main hall, pagoda, inner gate, and lecture hall have been designated as national historic sites and are preserved. During the Edo period, Kakuei, a monk from Yamashiro Province, rebuilt the temple as a Ritsu sect training center.
The Maitreya Bodhisattva half-seated statue from the Hakuho period and the Jizo Bodhisattva statue from the mid-Heian period are both designated as Important Cultural Properties. The Maitreya Bodhisattva statue is a small statue, 30.9 cm tall, and the inscription on the base indicates that it was made in the year "Hei-in" (666).
