Choenji Temple Important Cultural Property Wooden Eleven-Faced Kannon Statue Special Exhibition
The Eleven-Faced Kannon statue, which was designated a national treasure before the war and is now an important cultural property following the enactment of the Cultural Properties Protection Act, will be open to the public without prior reservations as part of the after-sales campaign.
Basic information
Choenji is a Jodo sect temple founded by the monk Kojun in 1632 (Kan'ei 9), and the grounds include the main hall, priests' quarters, Kannon hall, Jizo hall, and gate. It is uninhabited and is currently managed by Sozenji Temple in Fujiidera City. The wooden standing eleven-faced Kannon statue, an Important Cultural Property (formerly a National Treasure) enshrined in the Kannon hall, is made from a single piece of cypress wood and dates back to the early Heian period. Its face and physique are voluptuous. Its right hand hangs down in the "Yogan-in" mudra, and it holds a water jar in its left hand. The eleven small statues above its head are separated from the main statue's hair by its beautiful outline. Some believe that it originally stood in the nearby ancient temple, Sairinji.
