Tokujoji Temple's Important Cultural Property Amida Buddha Statue Opened to the Public
The Amida Buddha statue, known as the "Kawachi Great Buddha," is a gigantic statue of approximately 2.5 meters tall. It was designated a national treasure during the Meiji period (now an important cultural property following the implementation of the Cultural Properties Protection Act), and will be open to the public as part of the after-sales campaign, with no prior reservations required.
Basic information
Daihoji Temple was founded during the Tenbun era (1532-1555), and the seated Amida Buddha statue from the Kamakura period was brought over from what is now Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture in 1693 (Genroku 6) as the principal image. It has been designated an Important Cultural Property (formerly a National Treasure). Said to be the work of the Kasuga Buddhist sculptor, the statue is a rare giant statue measuring approximately 2.5 meters in height, known as the "Kawachi Great Buddha." Daihoji Temple was abandoned in 1880 (Meiji 13), but was rebuilt in 1913 (Taisho 2) under the name of Tokujoji Temple in Shiga Prefecture, where it remains to this day.
