    Enmeiji Temple

    Kawachi History / culture

It is said that the temple was founded in the Heian period with a stone Buddha carved by Kukai as its principal image. It was founded in the Edo period by a local monk named Jogon. Jogon was a figure who was so devoted that he was worshipped by the 5th Shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, and other feudal lords. The temple grounds are home to the "Yubae Maple," a tree said to be 800 years old, whose autumn foliage is spectacular. It is a cultural asset that constitutes the Japan Heritage "Town Where You Can Encounter the Middle Ages," and is home to the Seiryoji-style Shaka Nyorai (Important Cultural Property) and a treasure house built in 1927 that is registered as a national tangible cultural property.

In particular, the giant maple tree, said to be 1,000 years old, is known as the "Sunset Maple" for its beauty as it shines in the setting sun, and has been designated a prefectural natural monument. On May 5th, Enmei-ji Temple holds the Aoba Festival, a memorial service celebrating the birth of Kobo Daishi Kukai, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. On the day of the Aoba Festival, the doors of the main hall and Jizo Hall, which are usually closed, are opened.
