Tajihayahime Shrine

Founded around 580, the shrine enshrines Tajihayahime, Susanoo, and Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning.
Tajihayahime Shrine, adjacent to Kozen Park, famous for its plum groves, was founded around 580 and enshrines Tajihayahime-no-Mikoto, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, and Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning. Because Tajihayahime-no-Mikoto is a goddess, the shrine is said to grant blessings for safe childbirth, matchmaking, and protection from evil. The main hall, rebuilt in 1541 (Tenbun 10), is adorned with a variety of carvings and colorful designs, including dragons, clouds, waves, praying mantises, seaweed, and shellfish. It is a highly valued building, a precursor to the architectural style of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, when architectural carving techniques saw great advances (designated an Important Cultural Property; reservations are required for viewing). The shrine grounds offer seasonal views, including plum and cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, and autumn leaves. At the annual autumn festival in October, five danjiri floats and two children's mikoshi danjiri floats are pulled heroically through the town.
