Sakuya Konohana Kan
Sakuya Konohana Kan is an indoor botanical garden located in Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park (the Expo ’90 Commemorative Park) in Tsurumi Ward, Osaka. It was built as Osaka City’s pavilion for EXPO ’90, the International Garden and Greenery Exposition held in 1990. Designed to evoke a water lily floating on wetlands, the facility is a steel-frame structure covered entirely in glass and is one of Japan’s largest greenhouses. The name was chosen through a public contest and is derived from an ancient poem in the Kokin Wakashu. The building is two stories tall, about 30 meters high, with a total floor area of 6,890㎡, and features a central Flower Hall for exhibitions and concerts. Surrounding it are display areas showcasing about 5,500 species and roughly 15,000 plants from diverse climate zones, ranging from tropical and arid regions to alpine and polar environments. Through bloom control, visitors can enjoy over 300 kinds of flowers year-round, including Himalayan blue poppies, Japanese komakusa, and tropical water lilies. Seasonal flower exhibitions, events, and guided flower tours are also held inside.
