Shirokita Park

Shirokita Park is a historic park that opened in 1934 on land that was once part of the Yodo River riverbed. Within its approximately 9.5-hectare grounds is Shirokita Shobu-en, Kansai’s first strolling-style iris garden, which opened in 1964. Shirokita Shobu-en covers about 1.3 hectares, and during the May–June season around 250 varieties and 13,000 iris plants bloom in full glory. Iris varieties can be broadly grouped into three types based on where they were cultivated: Edo-type, Ise-type, and Higo-type. Edo-type irises are prized for their diversity and vivid colors, and they show their beauty especially well when planted in masses. Ise-type irises often have three drooping petals, while Higo-type irises often have six larger petals and give a more flamboyant impression. When Shirokita Shobu-en is open, Shirokita Park also hosts the “Shirokita Park Fair,” an event featuring live performances and food (canceled in 2020). In spring, plum blossoms and cherry blossoms also bloom, making it a nice place for hanami.
