Abeno Tasukaru (Abeno Disaster Prevention Learning Center)
The Osaka City Abeno Disaster Prevention Center is a facility where visitors can learn about earthquakes—one of Japan’s major natural hazards—and build practical disaster-preparedness knowledge. Participation is free, but advance reservation is required, and there are five different course options depending on age and group size. At the Osaka Disaster Prevention Information Station inside the center, visitors review potential future disasters across Osaka Prefecture and damage simulations to reaffirm the importance of preparedness. The program then teaches what actions to take during an earthquake, how to extinguish fires caused by earthquakes, how to escape smoke, how to move through a quake-damaged town, and how rescue works—through hands-on experiences. There are many immersive areas that convey the urgency of disasters, including equipment that simulates shaking up to seismic intensity 7 and a reconstructed “post-earthquake” streetscape, making it educational for both adults and children. It is located about 10 minutes on foot from Tennoji and Abeno stations, and is close to Abeno Harukas and Q’s Mall.
