Osaka Prefectural Sayamaike Museum

The Sayamaike Museum was built to present the results of archaeological excavations and research on Sayamaike. The building was designed by architect Tadao Ando. It is a museum where you can learn about ancient engineering wisdom, the history of Sayamaike, and dams. The exhibition area is divided into seven zones, allowing visitors to follow how Sayamaike developed through different eras. Concerts and special exhibitions are also held. Access is about a 15-minute walk from Nankai Kōya Line Osaka-Sayama-shi Station. Admission is free, and the North Embankment parking area can be used. Sayamaike was originally constructed in the Asuka period (early 7th century) and has been repeatedly renovated since antiquity while continuing to supply irrigation water to rice fields, still playing an important role today. On the 3rd floor, there is a café corner called “Sayama History Café,” offering hearty options such as a vegetable-rich daily lunch and Sayamaike Museum curry. In April, cherry blossoms bloom around the area, and it becomes lively with people enjoying hanami.
