Fukushima
Fukushima is a district name in Fukushima Ward, Osaka City, bordering Umeda to the east, Dojima to the southeast, and Nakanoshima to the south. Because Osaka developed on the delta of the Yodo River, many sandbars and small islands formed, and these places were often given names ending in “-shima” (island). Fukushima was one such place—originally a small island created by accumulated sediment. The area is also known for the “Battle of Noda Castle and Fukushima Castle,” which became a trigger for the Ishiyama War, a conflict that lasted for decades between Oda Nobunaga’s forces and the Ishiyama Honganji. In the Edo period, large-scale river engineering transformed the area into a center of commerce and goods transport. Today, Fukushima Ward is located about 1 km west of Umeda and is served by three stations—”Fukushima Station” (JR), ”Fukushima Station” (Hanshin), and ”Shin-Fukushima Station”—so access is highly convenient. Offices and high-rise condominiums line major roads, and the area has developed into a business district. The area around Fukushima Station is also famous as a “gourmet district,” with many restaurants clustered together.
