Shinsaibashi is Osaka's premier commercial area, sporting well-established department stores, specialty shops, luxury brands, and more. The name originates from the bridge that separates Senba and Shimanouchi. It has appeared in the movie "Black Rain." Shinsaibashisuji Shopping Street streches 580 meters north to south and is lined with around 180 stores including clothing shops and restaurants. The area is filled with shoppers on weekends. Long ago, the street served as a connecting path between the playhouses and docks in Dotonbori and the Shinmachi Red Light District. During the Edo Period, the main sources of business came from publications, old books, cloth, and trinkets; however, the Meiji period saw an increase in clocks and fancy cloths. In the Taisho and Showa periods, Western stores were on the rise, and consequently, so were young customers enjoying their shopping, referred to as "Shinbura-zoku." There are lots of visitors who come looking forward to the Yukata Festival, held by the shopping street, and other seasonal events.
