Kawazoko Pond is located within Tennoji Park, near Chausuyama. This area was once a battlefield during the Siege of Osaka: it served as Tokugawa Ieyasu’s headquarters in the Winter Campaign and as Sanada Yukimura’s headquarters in the Summer Campaign, and you can still find signs explaining this history. The origins of Kawazoko Pond are debated, but one theory says it is a remnant of a canal dug by Wake no Kiyomaro when he excavated a waterway crossing the Uemachi Plateau. Nearby Chausuyama is believed to have been formed by piling up the soil removed during that excavation. In 1937, a bridge was built over this man-made pond and named “Wake Bridge” after Wake no Kiyomaro. In autumn, the vivid red bridge contrasts beautifully with the dense autumn foliage, creating a stunning landscape around the pond. From the pond, you can also view Tsutenkaku Tower and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere. It is about a 5-minute walk from JR Tennoji Station and is close to other attractions such as the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, Keitakuen Garden (a paid garden created in the Edo period), and Tennoji Zoo.
