Shingenji Temple
Shingonji Temple is located just west of Sankō Shrine. It is about a 12-minute walk from JR Loop Line Tamatsukuri Station and about an 8-minute walk from Osaka Metro Nagahori Tsurumi-ryokuchi Line Tamatsukuri Station. In 1622, it was rebuilt by Priest Hakumō at the request of the Unno clan (ancestors of the Sanada family) to pray for the souls of Sanada Yukimura and his son Daisuke. Like Sankō Shrine, this temple also stands on the site of Yukimura’s former outwork (Sanadamaru). Because Osaka was directly ruled by the Tokugawa during the Edo period, it was not possible at that time to build a grave for Yukimura and Daisuke, who had fought against the Tokugawa forces in the Winter and Summer Sieges of Osaka. Instead, a memorial stone was erected in the temple grounds to mark the 400th memorial anniversary of Yukimura. The temple also contains the graves of Katsura Sōnosuke and Watanabe Kichitarō, members of the Kyoto Mimawarigumi who are said to have assassinated Sakamoto Ryōma. In addition, the “Mannaoshi Jizō-son,” believed to have the power to turn misfortune into good fortune, is enshrined here. The principal image is a seated statue of Amida Buddha newly made in 2003. Shingonji is also the 11th temple on the Osaka Shin 48 Amida Pilgrimage route.
