Tekijuku was a school opened in 1838 (Tenpō 9) by Ogata Kōan, regarded as a leading figure in Rangaku (Dutch studies) and Western medicine research. Over 24 years, about 3,000 students studied there, including disciples from across Japan such as Hashimoto Sanai and Fukuzawa Yukichi. Research conducted at Tekijuku led to major medical-historical achievements, including advances in Western medical studies, smallpox vaccination projects, and cholera treatment. In 1964 (Shōwa 39), it was designated an Important Cultural Property; restoration work by the Agency for Cultural Affairs returned it to its historical appearance, and it can now be visited. Tekijuku is located in the middle of an office district, about a 3-minute walk from Yodoyabashi Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line (Exit 8) and Keihan Railway Yodoyabashi Station (Exit 17). Tickets that combine Tekijuku admission with an Aqua-Liner cruise are sold, so some tourists visit as part of sightseeing. The surrounding area has been developed as a historic park, offering a calm space in the business district. In the green space to the west, there is a bronze statue of Kōan sitting and reading intently.
