Ikomayama (Ikoma Mountain)
Mount Ikoma is a 642-meter mountain on the border between Ikoma City, Nara Prefecture and Higashiosaka City, Osaka Prefecture. Long considered an important transportation and strategic point, it offers plenty to see, from nature and night views to attractions such as Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park and Hōzanji Temple. A cable car runs about 2 km up to the summit; this cable car is said to be the oldest in Japan, having opened in 1918. The cars are shaped like dogs and cats, giving the cable car a charming, playful feel. The mountain’s biggest draw is the night view from the top, where you can see as far as the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and Kansai International Airport. You can also drive up using the Shigisan-Ikoma Skyline. Another highlight, Hōzanji Temple, is known for having been revitalized about 300 years ago by the Edo-period monk Tankai Risshi, and it is affectionately called ‘Shōten-san’ by locals. Shōten-san is especially known for blessings related to romantic fulfillment. At Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park, which opened in 1929, a famous feature is the ‘Flying Tower,’ Japan’s oldest 30-meter-tall ride of its kind.
