Taiyoshi Hyakuban

Taiyoshi Hyakuban is a restaurant in Sannō, Nishinari Ward, Osaka City, originally built in the Taishō era and registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property in 2000. The name “Hyakuban” once indicated the highest rank within a red-light district. Osaka formerly had a red-light district known as Namba Shinchi, but a fire at the end of the Meiji period destroyed it completely. In the Taishō era, a new district called Tobita Shinchi was established, and this building was constructed around that time. Today, guests can enjoy hot pot and kaiseki cuisine surrounded by lavish Taishō-period architectural decoration. The exterior evokes Edo-era teahouse architecture, while highlights inside include a reception room featuring a “Yōmeimon” gate modeled after Nikkō Tōshōgū, and a grand banquet hall called the “Momoyama Hall,” filled with flamboyant Momoyama-style ornamentation that invites reflection on different eras of Japanese history. After World War II, the interior was extensively renovated with the help of painters and master carpenters brought in from Kyoto. The restaurant is reservation-only, but unlike some high-end Kyoto establishments, it does not refuse first-time guests.
