Taisho
Taisho Ward is one of Osaka City’s 24 administrative wards and is located on a delta formed by the Shirinashi and Kizu Rivers. Historically part of the southern Naniwa Yasoshima delta, the area began to develop after fishermen settled here during the Edo period. Land reclamation and river transport flourished, and in the Meiji era, industrialization advanced rapidly. In 1883, Osaka Spinning Company imported Japan’s first steam-powered spinning machine, leading Osaka to be called the "Manchester of the East.". Taisho Ward is also known as "Little Okinawa" due to the large Okinawan community, which accounts for about one-quarter of the ward’s population.
