Midosuji Statue Street
Midosuji Sculpture Street is an outdoor art spot consisting of 29 human-figure sculptures installed along Midosuji between Shinsaibashi Station and Yodoyabashi Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line. Midosuji is Osaka’s main boulevard, running about 4 kilometers from Namba Station to Umeda Station. It was named because it originally connected Kita-Midō (Hongwanji Tsumura Betsuin) in the north with Minami-Midō (Namba Betsuin of the Shinshū Ōtani-ha) in the south. The sculptures on Midosuji Sculpture Street were donated by companies with offices and other facilities along Midosuji. In addition to classic works by world-renowned sculptors such as Renoir, Rodin, and Bourdelle, and by major Japanese sculptors such as Kōtarō Takamura and Yasutake Funakoshi, you can also see distinctive pieces like Henry Moore’s works that may not look human at first glance, or Botero-esque plump figures. Because the collection was assembled mainly around the theme of a “hymn to humanity,” it may leave you feeling uplifted. Why not take a look as you shop along Midosuji?
