Tsunami and Storm Surge Disaster Prevention Station
The Tsunami & Storm Surge Station consists of a disaster-prevention building and an exhibition building. The disaster-prevention building centrally manages storm-surge and tsunami defense facilities such as seawalls and floodgates. The exhibition building presents displays aimed at raising disaster-awareness among Osaka residents. The exhibition follows a narrative flow (kishōtenketsu): in “Ki,” you learn about Osaka as a city that lies below sea level; in “Shō,” you study how storm-surge facilities work and the steady measures taken against storm surges; in “Ten,” you learn about the distinct threat of tsunamis compared to storm surges, including viewing real tsunami footage in a tsunami experience theater; and in “Ketsu,” you see exhibits on the Great East Japan Earthquake, sharing wisdom on protecting lives from tsunami disasters. It is conveniently located about a 2-minute walk from Awaza Station (Osaka Metro Chuo and Sennichimae Lines) Exits 8 and 10. Admission is free, making it an accessible place for anyone to learn practical knowledge about tsunamis and storm surges.
