Memorial Stone to Matsuo Basho's demise
The Bashō Death Site Monument (Bashō Shūen no Chi-hi) stands in the shade of roadside trees along Midosuji, near the shoulder of the main road and service road—about a 2-minute walk from Honmachi Station (Osaka Metro Midosuji / Yotsubashi / Chuo Lines). Because traffic is heavy, caution is needed when viewing it; you may need to walk along the greenbelt and, depending on your route, cross the roadway carefully. The monument marks the former site of the Hanaya Nizaemon residence, where the poet Matsuo Bashō died at age 51. There is no explanatory plaque—only the monument. When visiting, it is recommended to also see Bashō’s death-poem stone in the grounds of Minami-Mido (across the road). In Minami-Mido’s garden area (left rear of the precinct), a monument displays the verse Bashō wrote on his sickbed, and an explanatory panel is installed. Minami-Mido also holds an annual Bashō memorial service (Bashō-ki). Note that Minami-Mido visits are limited to weekdays 9:00–17:00.
