Iwafune Shrine
Iwahune Shrine is located upstream along the Amanogawa River in Katano City (northeastern Osaka). By public transport it is a bit inconvenient: take the Keihan Katano Line to Kisaichi Station, then a Keihan Bus and get off at Iwahune Jinja-mae; or take Kintetsu to Ikoma Station, transfer to a Nara Kotsu bus bound for Kitadahara, get off at the terminal “Kitadahara,” then walk about 10 minutes. The enshrined object is a massive, boat-shaped rock called “Ame no Iwahune,” about 12 m high and 12 m wide. Long known as a training site for Shinto practitioners and Shugendo ascetics, the shrine offers “cave tour” (iwakutsu-meguri) into the rock cavern beneath the giant boulder, and ordinary visitors can also experience it. For safety reasons and to prevent accidents, solo cave visits are not allowed by the shrine; you must go with at least one other person or join another group. Because you will pass through narrow gaps and climb within the cave, it is recommended to wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and comfortable, broken-in athletic shoes.
