Special exhibition of the National Treasure Sun, Moon and Four Seasons Landscape Screen Amanosan Kongoji Temple
The National Treasure Sun, Moon and Four Seasons Landscape Screen is a highly original and dynamic work that makes full use of traditional techniques unique to Yamato-e painting.
It is a pair of six-panel folding screens depicting landscapes of the four seasons, with the right panel depicting a spring to summer landscape and the sun in gold leaf.
The left panel depicts a landscape from autumn to winter, with the moon drawn in silver foil. The sea is placed in the center and foreground of the screen, and rocks and mountains are drawn to surround the sea.
The seasons change throughout the year, with spring, summer, autumn and winter taking place around the center. This is a valuable cultural asset that is only open to the public for a limited time in spring and autumn.
