Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine
This is the head shrine of the Sumiyoshi faith, which has 2,300 shrines across the country. It enshrines the god of the sea and has long been worshipped by people as the god of safe voyages and the arts and culture. It is extremely popular, with over 2 million visitors coming to worship at the start of the New Year.
Basic information
The "Sumiyoshi-style" main hall is the only National Treasure building in Osaka City. The "Sorihashi" bridge over the sacred pond is the symbol of the shrine, and it is said that simply crossing it will purify you. On the first day of each month, the shrine is crowded with many worshippers seeking blessings for business success and safety in the home. The 100,000m2 grounds are home to 600 stone lanterns and a 1,000-year-old camphor tree, making it a place where you can experience Japanese history and culture all at once.
