Tomb of Emperor Nintoku
Sakai's pride and joy: a symbol of ancient Japan recognized worldwide
This keyhole-shaped tumulus was built in the mid-5th century and is one of the three largest tumuli in the world, with triple moats and more than 10 secondary tombs.
Basic information
It ranks alongside the Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt and the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor in China as one of the three largest tombs in the world, and is the largest keyhole-shaped tumulus in Japan, measuring approximately 486m in length and believed to have been constructed in the mid-5th century. Built within the Mozu-Mimihara Three Tombs, it is surrounded by triple moats and contains more than 10 secondary tombs. While it is not possible to enter the tumulus itself, there is a 2.8km walking trail that allows you to get a real sense of its enormity even from outside the moat. The worship site is located on the Daisen Park side and has a tidy and solemn atmosphere.
