Daijobo Special Opening
The second Gozentate Honzon statue from the front in the photo is the Bishamonten statue, an Important Cultural Property (formerly a National Treasure). For a few days around May 10th, the secret Gozentate Honzon will also be open to the public, allowing visitors to admire the rare sight of the four Bishamonten statues lined up in front of and behind each other.
Basic information
It was once one of the temples of Homanji Temple, but after escaping the fires of Oda Nobunaga's war, only the Daijo-bo temple was rebuilt in Nipponbashi, and has since been worshipped as "Nagamachi Bishamon-do." The temple buildings were completely destroyed in the ravages of World War II, but the principal image escaped the fire. The principal image is a rare arrangement of four standing statues of Bishamonten lined up in front and behind each other. The last two are secret Buddha statues, and are only open to the public for a few days around the second Sunday of May and November. The second principal image, the Omaedachi statue, is a standing statue of Bishamonten from the mid-Kamakura period that has been designated an Important Cultural Property (formerly a National Treasure), and can be viewed at any time from the outer sanctuary.
