Special Historic Site: Baekje Temple Ruins

    Kawachi History / culture

The Baekje Temple Ruins are the remains of a temple that is believed to have been built in the latter half of the Nara period by the Baekje royal family, descendants of the royal family of Baekje, as a clan temple. Many elaborately crafted circular foundation stones remain, and it is one of the few ruins where the earthen platforms of the main halls and pagodas from when they were first built in the Nara period are still in good condition. Combined with the historical background of the Baekje royal family, this is a valuable historical site that shows the historical facts of cultural exchange between ancient Japan and Korea, and for this reason it was designated a National Historic Site in 1941 and a Special Historic Site in 1952.

    Hirakatashuku juku Kagiya Municipal Museum

    Kawachi History / culture

During the Edo period, Kagiya operated as a "boat waiting inn" where people could wait for boats plying the Yodo River, and in modern times it operated as a luxury inn and restaurant until 1997. The main house, a designated cultural property of the city, is a valuable historical structure that conveys the style of a townhouse from the Edo period. Upon receiving it as a donation, the city dismantled and restored it, and in July 2001, it opened as the Hirakatashuku Kagiya Municipal Museum, along with the annex, a modern Japanese-style building built in the early Showa period. The Kagiya site was designated a city historic site in 1998. In 2023, the annex was registered as a national tangible cultural property (building).
