Suichoen Archaeological Site

Eye-catching for its massive egg-shaped monument, this park invites you to learn about how people lived 20,000 years ago in Paleolithic Age and the methods they used to make stone tools.

Located almost exactly at the center of Habikino City, the Suichoen Archaeological Site was excavated in 1992, resulting in the discovery of a 20,000-year-old stone tool manufacturing area. Over 30 remnants of stone tool-making sites were found here together with 20,000 archaeological pieces, including stone shards and stone tools made from an easy-to-work stone material called “sanukite.”In 1998, the site was converted into a park where visitors are introduced to the history of 20,000 years ago through lectures and videos at the learning commentary facilities and the viewing terrace. The massive cross-sectioned egg-shaped monument at the park’s entrance is modeled after a piece of sanukite broken into shards to make tools. Coming into the park, you’ll feel as if you could hear the unearthly sounds of sanukite echoing down the ages. (Photo courtesy of Habikino City Board of Education)
