Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts
The Osaka Municipal Museum of Art is located inside Tennoji Park in Tennoji Ward, Osaka, and its historic building was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2015. In 1914, the Sumitomo family built their main residence on this site, which was later donated to the City of Osaka together with the Japanese garden ”Keitakuen” for the purpose of establishing a museum. Opened in 1936 to contribute broadly to the promotion of culture in Osaka, the museum consists of three above-ground floors and two basement levels. The main exhibition halls host special exhibitions and collection exhibitions. The collection exhibitions showcase more than 8,500 works, including Japanese and Chinese paintings, sculptures, and crafts, as well as Important Cultural Properties entrusted by temples and shrines. Notable collections include the Abe Collection of Chinese calligraphy and paintings, the Yamaguchi Collection of Chinese stone Buddhist sculptures, the Cazal Collection featuring Japanese maki-e lacquerware, netsuke, and inro, and the Tama Collection of Japanese classical art. The basement of the main building houses an art research institute, where practical studies in drawing, painting, sculpture, and modeling are conducted.
