Abeno Harukas Art Museum
Andrew Wyeth Exhibition

America, my spiritual home, an unforgettable place.

Basic information

Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) was a nationally popular painter known for his depictions of America, and he also had many fans in Japan.
This exhibition is the long-awaited first retrospective of his work in Japan since his death.
Wyeth distanced himself from the avant-garde trends in postwar American art, and instead continued to depict the landscapes and people around him with meticulous realism.
His works are limited to those set in his hometown of Pennsylvania and Maine, where he spent his summers. The things Wyeth discovered and felt there, combined with the deep spirituality cultivated through his own life experiences, resulted in paintings that moved people's hearts beyond regions and countries.
This exhibition also sheds light on the concept of "boundaries" through motifs such as windows and doors that Wyeth often depicted.
Beyond the ultimate boundary of life and death, what exactly are the "boundaries" that physically and psychologically separate us in our daily lives?
On the other hand, depending on how you look at it, it could also become a place that connects people and the world...
We hope you will take your time to appreciate the 100 paintings by Wyeth, including 15 works being shown in Japan for the first time, and reflect on them in various ways.
