Basic information
Founded in 1753, the British Museum in London, England, is one of the world's leading museums.
The museum's collection of Japanese art is considered one of the most comprehensive in the world, both in terms of quantity and quality.
The formation of this collection has been supported by people who, since the late 19th century when Japonisme was popular, were fascinated by the culture of Japan, a foreign land across the sea. The connections forged by numerous collectors and curators have spread beyond national borders and eras, and continue to be passed down to this day.
This exhibition will showcase a carefully selected collection of outstanding works from the museum's Japanese collection of over 40,000 items, including Edo period screens, hanging scrolls, and picture scrolls, some of which are being exhibited in Japan for the first time, such as Kitagawa Utamaro's precious original painting "Courtesan Reading a Letter," Maruyama Okyo's "Screen Painting of a Tiger Crossing a Crossing," and Katsushika Hokusai's "Preliminary Drawing for 'The Complete Picture Book of Everything'," as well as woodblock prints by eight representative ukiyo-e artists, including Utamaro, Sharaku, Hokusai, and Hiroshige.
