Osaka Tenmangu Shrine
Tenjin Festival

A magnificent summer festival adorned with fire and water.
Basic information
It is one of Japan's three major festivals (the others being Kyoto's Gion Festival and Tokyo's Kanda Festival). Various events take place over a period of about one month, until July 25th.
In particular, on the 25th, the main festival day, Shinto rituals such as the land procession take place, and at night, a boat procession takes place on the Okawa River (formerly the Yodo River), with many boats passing by and fireworks being set off as a tribute.
The festival is also known as a festival of fire and water, due to the magnificent sight of bonfires, lanterns, and fireworks reflected in the Okawa River. In addition, the Hokonagashi Shinto ritual takes place on the 24th, the eve of the festival.
