[Starting November 1, 2026] Japan's tax-free system is changing! Points you should know before traveling ✈️

To everyone who will be visiting Japan in the future!!
Starting November 1, 2026, Japan's tax-free shopping system will be revamped!

Until now, sales tax was waived when purchasing goods at duty-free shops in the city,
Under the new system, you first purchase goods at a price that includes consumption tax.

After that, when you leave Japan, your goods will be inspected at customs.
The system will change so that an amount equivalent to the consumption tax will be refunded.

[Points to note when purchasing products eligible for consumption tax refund]
Please do not place items eligible for refunds in your checked baggage until customs has confirmed them on the day of your departure from Japan.
Products for which you intend to receive a consumption tax refund should not be opened, consumed, or used within Japan.
• When inspecting your order at customs, please have all items eligible for a sales tax refund included in the same purchase procedure ready.

Also, please arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare to prepare for departure procedures.
If you're planning a trip to Japan, be sure to check out the new consumption tax refund system before you depart!
