Event to discover the charm of Osaka, City of Food(15-17 Oct. 2019)
16 (Wed.) Oct. 2019 Naniwa-Kuroushi Farm / Hannan city
An Osaka local product, certified black cattle reared on the sole operating farm in the area. The base cattle are a crossbreed of Tajiri, Kedaka and Ito pedigrees to avoid breed concentration. They are fed with hay, mainly made up of rice straw to thoroughly develop their physique and produce the best disposition ruminants. 100-120 cows are regularly kept, all female. Calves around 10 months old are brought in, which are then raised slowly for over 20 months in a barn in Hannan city in a natural environment to avoid stress. They are shipped out when they are over 30 months old after long-term fattening. Cow manure is fermented for compost, which is distributed at no charge to farms in Osaka and Wakayama prefectures including neighborhood vegetable farms. Osaka Fujimaru Wine supplies grape pomace for feed, and uses composted Naniwa-Kuroushi manure as fertilizer on the farm.
