About Osaka

Event to rediscover the charms of "Osaka, the city of food" (October 15-17, 2019)

Wednesday, October 16, 2019: Visit to Naniwa Black Cattle Ranch / Hannan City

Certified Osaka-grown Japanese Black beef, raised on Osaka's only ranch. A cross between the Tajiri, Kedaka, and Ito bloodlines is used to ensure the blood is not thickened. The cattle are fed mainly rice straw and hay, ensuring thorough skeletal development to fully utilize the characteristics of ruminants. The farm regularly raises 100-120 head of cattle. All are female, and calves are introduced at approximately 10 months of age. They are raised in a natural, stress-free environment for over 20 months in a barn in Hannan City. They are fattened for a long period of time, at least 30 months after birth, before being shipped.

The cow waste is fermented and turned into compost, which is then donated to nearby vegetable farms and other farms in Osaka and Wakayama prefectures. Osaka Fujimaru Wine provides grape pomace as feed for the Naniwa Kuro cattle, and uses composted cow dung as fertilizer for its farm.
