About Osaka

Event to rediscover the charms of "Osaka, the city of food" (October 15-17, 2019)

Wednesday, October 16, 2019: Visit to a chrysanthemum field / Kaizuka City

In the Kanto region, chrysanthemums bloom in autumn, whereas shungiku flowers in spring, hence the name. In Osaka, the leaves are eaten, so they are called "chrysanthemum greens." Osaka Prefecture ranks among the top two in the nation for the amount of shungiku produced. There are many different types, and in the Kanto region, the mainstream is the medium-leaf variety, with thick leaves, deeply notched edges, and upright stems. In Osaka, on the other hand, even with the same medium-leaf variety, the "kabuhari" type, which does not grow upright and has a horizontal stem, has become established. Because they can be shipped with the roots attached, they are easy to maintain freshness.
