“Amerikamura” is the most vibrant city of Minami, Osaka that has been shaping and leading the trends of the youth culture in the Kansai region. It refers to the entire area on the west side of the Osaka Metro Shinsaibashi Station that spreads from Nagahori street to Dotonbori street. The center of which is Triangle Park. Here, there are flea markets and performances by young aspiring comedians and musicians, of which attracts up to 200,000 young visitors to the neighborhood during the weekends. Back during the Edo period, it was called “Charcoal House Town” due to charcoal being collected in the area from Osaka Bay to Dotonbori. In the 1970s, the area became famous for second-hand clothes and jeans that were being sold in renovated warehouses. In addition, used records and miscellaneous goods that were purchased in the West Coast of the United States were also sold here. The name “Amerikamura” was born from the number of stores that popped up after 1965 that sold goods and fashion that were imported from America. True to its name, it has been said that you could feel the West Coast culture of America if you visit this city. Even today, the area is still hustling as a place to enjoy not only fashion but music and other trends as well.
