Manners when staying and traveling with pets

When you stay or travel with your pet, you will likely pass by many other guests.
There is a big difference in opinion between those of us who have pets and those who don't.

Now that we are on the verge of creating a world where we can enjoy traveling with our pets, why not take a moment to review what etiquette is so as not to cause trouble for people who do not have pets?

Travel etiquette #1

When traveling by car, you will likely stop at service areas, parks, convenience stores, etc. along the way to take a break. At these times, your pet will also need to take a toilet break. Try to find a place that will not cause a nuisance to other customers, but is also easy for your pet to use the toilet. Please do so in a place as far away from pedestrian traffic as possible.

Travel etiquette #2

If you have to travel on foot, please choose a route that is easy for your pet to walk. If you absolutely have to walk on a busy road, especially if you have a small dog, please make sure to hold it in your arms as you move. Even if you think it's okay, other passengers around you may be nervous about kicking your dog.

Travel etiquette #3

If you are using public transportation, be sure to check with the public transportation company before your trip to find out whether you can bring your pet with you, if there are any restrictions on the size of carriers, and how much the fare will be.

Etiquette when staying at a hotel #1

Before check-in, please let your pet use the toilet and wipe its feet clean.
We often see pets holding their pee while traveling, only to have it go at the front desk right after checking in. Please make preparations in advance to prevent this from happening.

Etiquette when staying at a hotel #2

When you enter your room, first decide where your pet's toilet is and make it your top priority. Once the toilet is ready, try encouraging your pet to use the toilet right away. Once your pet has learned to use the toilet once, you can rest assured that it will be fine until check-out.
Each Hotels has its own local rules, but generally speaking, it is not allowed to let pets sleep on the bed. Although sheets are changed every day, it is difficult to change the futon and pillow itself.
Also, avoid leaving your pet alone in the room when you go out. If your pet is left alone in an unfamiliar environment, it may bark continuously or become ill.

Hotel Etiquette #3

When you check out, try lightly cleaning the room you used with a sticky cleaner. Also, separating pet waste from human waste will make cleaning easier afterwards. Please be considerate of other guests and pets when you are at the front desk, lobby, hallways, etc., and always keep your pet on a leash or in a sling so that they can stay comfortable until the very end.

What did you think?
During your travels and at your accommodations, you will likely encounter people who are different from the usual. I hope that you will improve your awareness of manners one by one so that you can become a good manners leader and not just throw away your embarrassment while traveling.

Recommended items to bring when traveling with pets

Traveling with pets can be stressful for us, but so can our pets.
Make sure to prepare well before your trip so that your pet can relax as much as possible, just like normal.

If you are well prepared, you will have peace of mind during your trip. Let's take a look at each step.

  • Foods I always eat

For dry food, measure the amount by gram and store it in a resealable plastic bag so you can easily take it out when traveling. For homemade food, store it in an airtight storage container. It's also a good idea to check in advance whether your hotel has a microwave. Don't forget a food bowl, either.

  • Water

It's convenient to carry water in a plastic bottle in the summer, and hot water in a water bottle that keeps the temperature stable during the cold winter. When traveling, you may be tempted to give your pet water less often, but please make a conscious effort to keep them hydrated.

  • Toilet seat

It may be a bit bulky, but try to bring as many sheets as you normally use.
It's also a good idea to bring a waterproof sheet to put under the toilet seat. Even if the toilet paper spills over, it won't stain the hotel floor.

  • Manners Pants

You may not usually have your pet wear these, but take this opportunity to train them to wear them. Once they learn to wear them, you won't have to worry about them making a mess at hotels or cafes.

  • Carrier or crate

Even in Hotels, be sure to keep your dog on a leash in shared spaces and keep an eye on it at all times.

  • bed

Be sure to bring your pet's usual bed. Just as we can have trouble sleeping when we travel to an unfamiliar place and use a different pillow, pets can also have trouble sleeping when they are in a different location. However, if you have their usual bed with you, they will be able to sleep soundly and recover from the fatigue of your trip.

  • clothes

One is to take cute photos with your pet when you travel, and the other is to reduce pet hair flying around when you go to a cafe, etc. You need to be careful because telling customers around you that your dog is a breed that doesn't shed won't convey that to customers who don't have pets.

  • Usual walking set

Bring the same items you normally take on walks, such as water for flushing, poop bags, wet wipes, etc. Once your dog gets used to traveling, you might want to consider buying a travel kit for walking.

  • Rabies vaccination certificate,
    Vaccination certificate

Your pet receives rabies vaccinations and other vaccinations once a year around spring. Don't forget to bring this certificate. You will often be asked to show it, especially at hotels. If it's difficult to carry around a paper copy, take a picture of it with your smartphone and save it so you don't forget.

Pet training tips to remember when traveling

How well are you able to train your pet in your everyday life?
Everyone has their own ideas about discipline, but especially when traveling, it's important to be considerate and not cause trouble for other guests.
In order to avoid causing trouble to other customers, both good manners and discipline are necessary, but today we will talk about discipline.
What training do you need to do when traveling with pets?

The first is toilet training.
If your dog suddenly starts to go to the bathroom on a busy sidewalk or in a park while you're out for a walk, it will be a nuisance to other visitors.Your little children might ask, "Why can dogs pee wherever they want?"
Therefore, it is best to train your dog to use the toilet in a designated place and only when given a command such as "one, two."

It is best not to mark your pet if possible, as other customers who do not have pets will not know whether your pet is actually marking or not, which can make them feel uncomfortable.

If you absolutely cannot prevent your dog from marking, we recommend that you wear etiquette pants. By wearing etiquette pants when walking in hotels, cafes, or other crowded places, you can eliminate the small worry in your mind of "What if my dog makes a mess?" and enjoy your trip with peace of mind.

The second is excessive barking.
It's a pet's natural tendency to bark when they encounter a stimulus, such as when they suddenly meet another pet, so it can't be helped. However, if your pet continues to bark even when there's no particular reason for it to do so, it can be difficult to travel with your pet.

Therefore, the bare minimum is to train your dog to stop barking immediately when you say "no."

Similarly, barking is prohibited even in hotels that only allow pets.
If you're trying to enjoy a delicious meal at your travel destination and your pet keeps barking nearby, even if you're a pet owner, it can be distracting and make it difficult to relax.

Please make sure to train your pet to use the toilet and not bark unnecessarily, so that both those of us with pets and those without can have a pleasant trip.

Health management and trouble prevention

If you decide to travel with your pet, there is one thing you should be careful about: managing your pet's health.

We all get a little nervous when we go to an unfamiliar place or a new place for the first time, don't we? The same goes for pets. Some of you may remember carrying motion sickness medicine with you on bus trips as a child.

Just like with your pets, be sure to take care of their health before, during, and after your trip.

(1) Before traveling

Take your pet to your regular veterinarian and have it checked for a quick health check.
If you go to your regular vet, they will be able to tell you if anything is wrong and may even give you advice on traveling. If your pet doesn't like cars, they may even prescribe motion sickness medication.

(2) Traveling

When you travel a lot, your pet may find it difficult to move around in a seat or crate. This can be stressful for your pet, as they would normally be able to move freely when they want to.
They may also become wary or excited when they see unusual smells or sights.

If we focus too much on sightseeing, we may have less time to spend with our pets, which could lead to them feeling lonely. All of this can be prevented with a little consideration.

For example, when traveling by car, take a break every two hours and take a short walk, make time to relax when going somewhere different from usual, and don't forget to take care of your pet while sightseeing. When traveling, we tend to do things at our own pace, but if you're traveling with your pet, try to create a schedule that allows you to move at their pace.

(3) After the trip

When we go on a trip, we come back with good memories, but also tiredness.
The same goes for pets, so after you return from your trip, be sure to brush your pet more thoroughly than usual, give them some tasty treats you brought back as a souvenir, and make sure they get plenty of time to sleep.
I might sleep twice as much as usual, but that will also be a memory.

What did you think?
When traveling with your pet, be sure to take care of their health and prevent any issues. Please refer to this article.

Perhaps you can be more gentle if you think of it as having your pet accompany you on a trip, rather than taking it with you.

The appeal of traveling with pets

Even if you want to travel with your pet, the reality is that it's difficult to do so because there are few places that allow pets to stay and it's a hassle to find restaurants that allow pets.
Recently, the number of pet-friendly places has been gradually increasing, but that doesn't mean you can go everywhere.
So why bother traveling with pets when there are such minor hurdles?
There are three main benefits to traveling with pets.

(1) Discover!

First, the first one.
You can see expressions on your pet's face that you don't normally see. Just like us, pets react sensitively to being in different places, with different atmospheres, and with different people than on our usual walks. The first attraction is that you can see your pet's true self, such as being more energetic than usual, smiling more than usual, or eating delicious food.

(2) Encounters and experiences that can only be had with pets

The second attraction is that you can experience things that you wouldn't be able to experience if you were traveling with just your pet. Staying at a hotel that allows pets is a valuable experience, and walking your pet at your destination can give you the opportunity to talk to locals and discover hidden spots that aren't listed in guidebooks.
Sometimes you can take a leisurely walk in a different park than usual.
Another attraction is that by moving at the same speed as your pet, you can have a rare encounter.

(3) It will become a special memory!

The third reason is that you can create unforgettable memories. As you know, pets have a much shorter lifespan than us. That's why, during that short time, traveling with your pet is a valuable experience that will create irreplaceable memories. Be sure to take lots of commemorative photos with your pet on your smartphone while you're traveling. Having lots of commemorative photos of your beloved pet at hand will no doubt make you feel a little more energetic tomorrow.

What did you think?
Once you have decided on your destination for your trip with your pet, be sure to reserve some free time and take a leisurely walk around your destination.

Things to keep in mind when traveling by public transport

When traveling on a train or bus with your pet, you may be worried about your pet getting angry or causing trouble for other passengers. To avoid such worries, try to keep the following three things in mind.

(1) Check the railway company's rules

Previously, pets could ride the train relatively freely as long as they were in a pet cart. However, as more and more people began to see pets riding in carts, complaints from other passengers began to increase, and now more and more railway companies are prohibiting pet carts from riding the train.
You may already know whether it is okay to ride local trains or not, but if you are going to a new place, be sure to check the railway company's website beforehand to see if it is okay to ride the train with a pet cart.
This will reduce the chances of you having an unpleasant experience when you arrive at the station and the station staff says, "No, no!"

(2) Keep your pet out of sight while riding the train or bus.

Sometimes, even if you have your pet in a pet carrier or sling, you might see your pet peeking out at some point. That's a no-no.
Some customers love pets, but there are also customers who dislike them, are not good with them, or are allergic to them.
So, although we understand that it's a shame for your pet, please make sure to keep them completely hidden and wait until they get off.

(3) Regularly train your child to get used to moving around in a carrier or sling.

Of course, depending on the pet's personality, some pets dislike confined spaces. The same is true for humans. However, if you train your pet regularly to understand that the inside of a carrier, sling, or crate is a safe place, your pet will be able to stay quiet.
This training will also be extremely useful when accompanying others to evacuation shelters in the event of a disaster, so we encourage you to give it a try.

Please keep these three points in mind and try using public transportation with your pet.
