The shrine was founded in 1885, with connections to the site of an ancient battlefield and grave of the enshrined deity, Kitabatake Akiie. When the deity was enshrined, Akiie's father, Kitabatake Chikafusa, who played a central role in the Southern Court, was also enshrined. On July 22nd, the day of the main shrine festival in the summer, a procession ceremony is held to the grave of Kitabatake Akiie in Kitabatake Park. A summer purification ceremony is also held to pray for a safe surviving of the summer.
