Ai-jinja Shrine

Both the shrine and temple are deeply connected to Fujiwara Kamatari.

This entire region was long the domain of the Nakatomi Airaji clan, a branch of the Nakatomi clan. Their ancestral deity, Ameno-Koyane-no-Mikoto, is enshrined at Azuma Shrine, an ancient shrine listed in the Engishiki Shinmeicho (Choice of Shinto Shrines), also known as Naemori Daimyojin. The shrine's collection includes the Important Artifact, the Triangular-rimmed Two-God and Two-Beast Mirror, excavated from the Shogunyama Kofun burial mound in the same area. It is believed to have been imported from China (Wei) during the early Yamato period from Yamataikoku. During the annual festival in May, a ritual is held in which a portable shrine (mikoshi) makes a visit to the neighboring Dainenji Temple. Both the shrine and temple are deeply connected to Lord Fujiwara Kamatari.
