Amami Onsen

Located in the mountains near the border with Wakayama Prefecture, Amami Onsen, just a short walk from Amami Station on the Nankai Koya Line, opened in the early Nanboku-cho period in the 14th century. Long ago, travelers on pilgrimages to Koyasan stopped off to soothe their fatigue, and it's said they called the hot springs "Paradise Bath." The waters are simple radioactive (25 degrees Celsius) and are said to be effective for chronic cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, neuralgia, and gastrointestinal disorders. The hot springs are located on the banks of the Amami River, in Nanten-en, a sukiya-style inn with a 10,000m2 Japanese garden. The main building was relocated from the annex of Shioyu, which was located in Ohama, Sakai City, and was designed by Tatsuno Kingo, a renowned Meiji-era architect who also designed the Osaka City Central Public Hall. It is now a registered tangible cultural property of Japan.
