The Bank of Japan Old Osaka Branch

A magnificent Western-style building in stone and brick, with a beautiful blue-green roof dome. Tours of the interior are available (reservation required).

One of Osaka's finest examples of modern architecture, the City Hall stands on Nakanoshima island between the Tosabori and Dojima Rivers, facing Midosuji Avenue, Osaka's main street. It is a two-storey, Western-style stone building with a beautiful blue-green roof dome. Built in 1903, it was modeled after the National Bank of Belgium. It was designed by Kingo Tatsuno, who designed Tokyo Station and Osaka Central Public Hall, and other architects. In the Edo period, a warehouse of the Shimabara fief stood on this ground, and in the early Meiji period, the villa of Tomoatsu Godai, a leader in the Osaka business community. Plans were made to rebuild the building into a high-rise to expand the office space, but in 1980-1982 large-scale renovation work was carried out, retaining the exterior walls on three sides, and some parts of the interior. A new high-rise building was also built on the west side of the grounds. Tours of the interior of the old wing and some offices in the new wing are available, by reservation only.
