Dainenji Temple (Ibaraki City)

This temple, associated with Fujiwara Kamatari, is one of the oldest in Ibaraki City and allows visitors to reflect on its history.
Surrounded by remains related to Fujiwara Kamatari, this temple stands on a hilltop in the historically romantic Ai village, with stone steps leading up to it. It was founded by Fujiwara Kamatari and his eldest son, Joe, during the Asuka period. Known as Daiorikando, it became a Jodo sect Nembutsu training center during the Azuchi-Momoyama period and continues to function to this day. The mountain behind the temple grounds was a mass tomb from the Kofun period and has been a place of prayer since ancient times. The temple houses a Heian-period "Standing Amida Nyorai" statue and a "Standing Bishamonten" statue (designated a cultural property by Ibaraki City) by a Nara sculptor. The "Standing Jizo Bodhisattva" statue, which is said to have washed ashore in the Ai River, is said to have miraculous powers for praying for rain. The "Golden Bamboo" in the garden is a sacred bamboo that inspired Lord Kamatari to build the temple. Village legend says that the tips of the branches sometimes wither because Kamatari's head was reburied at Mount Tonomine in Nara.
