EIFUKU-JI TEMPLE

Known as "Kami no Taishi," this famous temple is home to the tomb of Prince Shotoku and two other people. On the anniversary of Prince Shotoku's death, a memorial service and a tea offering ceremony by the head of the Omotesenke school are held.

Eifuku-ji Temple is said to be the site of the mausoleum (Sankotsu Ichibyo) where Prince Shotoku, his mother, Empress Anahobe no Hashihito, and his wife, Kashiwabe no Oiratsume, are buried. It was built by Empress Suiko to protect the tomb, and in 724, Emperor Shomu renovated the large temple complex. Also known as "Kami no Taishi," Eifuku-ji Temple was a popular destination for pilgrims during the Heian period, when worship of the prince was thriving. Along with the "Naka no Taishi" at Nonaka-ji Temple in Habikino City and the "Shimo no Taishi" at Daisho Shogun-ji Temple in Yao City, the temple was one of the "Three Princes of Kawachi" that attracted many pilgrims. At the end of the Sengoku period, the temple was burned down by Oda Nobunaga, but in 1603, Toyotomi Hideyori rebuilt the "Holy Spirit Hall." Since then, the Tahoto Pagoda and other structures have been rebuilt one after another, remaining in their original state to this day (both designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan). Every year on April 11th and 12th, the Daijo-e Ceremony is held to commemorate the death anniversary of Prince Shotoku, and under the cherry blossoms in full bloom on the temple grounds, a memorial service is held, followed by tea offerings by the head of the Omotesenke school, a Homa ceremony with lanterns, and rice cake throwing.
