Eifukuji Temple

The large juniper trees tell of the temple's long history. This temple commemorates the soul of Kusunoki Masashige, a hero of the Northern and Southern Courts.

This Jodo Shinshu Honganji temple is located in Tadaoka Town, Senboku District. It's said that in 1332, when Kusunoki Masashige, under the orders of Emperor Godaigo, raised an army at Chihayaakasaka, Kanetaka, a village headman in Tadaoka, assisted him and barricaded himself in Chihaya Castle. After Masashige's death in battle at Minatogawa in Kobe, Kanetaka converted to the Tendai sect of Buddhism and built this temple to pray for Masashige's soul. Later, in 1498, Rennyo Shonin visited the temple and converted to Jodo Shinshu. The temple grounds are one of Osaka's "100 Green Landscapes," and are home to five towering juniper trees, designated as Osaka Prefecture Natural Monuments. The tallest tree, believed to have been brought back from Mount Ibuki by Imai Kaneji, a vassal of Kiso Yoshinaka, and transplanted in 1198, reveals its long history in its tree rings.
