Former Mukai Family Residence

A thatched roof house that retains the architectural style of the Sennan region from the Edo period.
Izumisano City is located in the Sennan region of southern Osaka Prefecture, and its mountainous area borders Wakayama Prefecture. In the past, many thatched-roof houses were built here. This house is one of them, and it well preserves the Edo period architectural style of this area. The layout is four rooms: kuchinoma, zashiki, daidoko, and nandoko. The daidoko protrudes into the dirt floor in a "kuichigai yomadori" (staggered four-room layout), using a technique that adds another beam between the sashikamoi (lintel) and rafters to make the ceiling appear higher. There is an ink inscription on the storehouse beams dated 1802, suggesting that the main house was built around that time.
