Hachikenyahama Pier

This pier, which flourished as a departure and arrival point for the 30-koku boats connecting Kyoto and Osaka during the Edo period, reopened in March 2008 as a symbol of Osaka, the water city.

Hachikenyahama Pier, originally located at Nagataya Konbu Main Store, is said to have been named after the eight boathouses that once stood there. During the Edo period, this pier was a bustling land base for pilgrims to Kumano. It is featured as the location of the Yaji and Kita duo, who appear in Jippensha Ikku's "Tokaidochu Hizakurige," and as the place where Mori no Ishimatsu took his first steps in Osaka in the rakugo story "Ishimatsu Thirty-koku Boat." While the train journey between Osaka and Kyoto now takes about 30 minutes, in the Edo period, the Kyoto-Osaka trip by boat took about six hours one way, and the Osaka-Kyoto trip took about 12 hours due to the need to travel against the current of the river. Today, it has been revived as a port where people can enjoy leisurely cruises and is a place of relaxation.
