Hamadera Park Rose Garden

Hamadera Park is one of the oldest prefectural parks in Osaka. In the rose park, 300 varieties and 6,500 roots of roses are planted. Rare Japanese native roses are also grown.

Hamadera Park is a short walk from Hamadera Koen Station on the Nankai Railway or Hamadera-ekimae Station on the Hankai Tramway. The park, constructed in 1873, is the oldest prefectural park in Osaka. Around 5,000 pine trees thrive in this spacious park, and have been designated one of Japan's 100 great pine tree groves (as selected by the Association for Protecting Pine Trees in Japan). The Rose Garden, with an area of about 2.5 hectares, was completed in 1993 as part of Osaka Prefecture's Flower Project Osaka. The Rose Garden is an impressive Japanese circuit-style garden consisting of five zones, the "Lakes, Marshes, and Waterways Zone," the "Japanese Village Zone," the "Mountain Scenery Zone," a walking path, and the "Village Zone," which resembles a European garden. Approximately 300 varieties of rose and 6,500 rosebushes, including the Noibara Multiflora Rose, native to Japan, Tsukushi-ibara (a variety of Multiflora Rose), and Hamanasu (R. rugosa), bloom from spring to early winter. The garden is typically open from March to December. Entry is free, and the park is open only during viewing season from spring through autumn. A volunteer group, the Rose Garden Tours Appreciation Club, holds occasional tours.
