Higobashi Bridge

Higobashi Bridge spans the Tosabori River, connecting Nishi Ward and Nakanoshima. At the northern end of the bridge, Nakanoshima, there once stood the storehouses of the Higo and Kumamoto domains (warehouses established in Osaka by feudal lords to pay annual rice taxes). The "New Map of Osaka" from 1657 (Meireki 3) lists it as "Higodonobashi Bridge." Originally a wooden bridge, it was washed away by a flood. In 1881 (Meiji 21), along with Watanabebashi Bridge, it was replaced with an iron bridge imported from England. In 1926 (Taisho 15), it was replaced with a luxurious concrete bridge in the Spanish Renaissance style. It has since been rebuilt twice more. The current bridge was renovated in 1994. Having been reborn many times over the years, Higobashi Bridge remains a bustling, bustling street, bustling with people and vehicles.
