Hiraoka Shrine

An ancient sacred place filled with divine energy: Motokasuga Hiraoka Shrine, the Ichinomiya of Kawachi Province

This ancient shrine, Kawachi Province's Ichinomiya Shrine, is listed in the Engishiki Shinmeicho (Book of Shinto Shrines) and is said to have been founded three years before the accession of Emperor Jimmu. Later, a split deity from Hiraoka Shrine was enshrined at Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, earning it the nickname "Moto-Kasuga." The main hall is said to have been built by Katagiri Katsumoto under Toyotomi Hideyori, but the current building was rebuilt in 1826. The Akigo Festival (Akigo Festival), considered the best in the prefecture, is a spectacular and dynamic event featuring taiko floats entering the shrine and a float parade. Every year on December 23rd, at the end of the year, the "Shimenawakake Shinji" (Shimekake Ritual), commonly known as the "Owarai Shinji," is held, in which new shimenawa ropes are hung and the crowd laughs. At the beginning of the year, the "Kayuuran Shinji" (Porridge Ritual), in which the year's rice harvest is predicted using red bean porridge, is held. The forest within the shrine grounds has long been known as "Hoki no Mori" (Forest of Treasures), and is rich in nature, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing scents of each season, and was designated one of the Ministry of the Environment's "Top 100 Fragrant Landscapes" in 2001. Every spring, approximately 280 plum trees of 23 varieties bloom in the Hiraoka Shrine plum grove on the south side of the shrine grounds.
