Hokonagashi Bridge

This bridge spans the Dojima River, and every year on the morning of July 24th, the Hokonagare Shinto ritual, one of the events of the Tenjin Festival, is held at the foot of the bridge.

This bridge spans the Dojima River, connecting the north bank of Nakanoshima (near the Osaka City Central Public Hall and The Museum of Oriental Ceramics) with Nishitenma (near the Osaka High Court). Its name comes from the Tenjin Festival's "Hokonagare Ritual" (a ritual in which a sacred spear float is floated down the river to determine the year's sacred shrine or otabisho) held at its foot on the morning of July 24th every year. The bridge was first constructed in 1918, but the current bridge was completed in 1929. The use of Japanese-style classical designs for the balustrades, lighting fixtures, and main pillars likely coincided with the Tenjin Festival's Hokonare Ritual. These were later lost during the war due to metal donations. However, in 1980, classic-design balustrades, lighting fixtures, and brick-paved walkways were installed, matching the Nakanoshima area's aesthetic, and remain in place to this day. For about 40 minutes during the Hokonare Shinto ritual on July 24th, this normally quiet bridge is filled with spectators from the bridge.
