Kitamido (Tsumura Betsuin)

The name of Midosuji, a street that runs north and south through Osaka city, comes from this temple and Minami-Mido.
This is a Jodo Shinshu Honganji temple. In 1591, a temple building was built by followers in Osaka to protect the light of Nembutsu. In 1597, it was moved to its current location, which was then called Tsumura-go, and came to be called Kita-Mido. Along with Minami-Mido (Namba Betsuin), it is beloved by the people of Osaka, but was burned down in the Great Osaka Air Raid of 1945. It was rebuilt in 1964 as a modern main hall, and remains so to this day. The road connecting the north and south halls came to be called Midosuji, after these two halls.
